I’m an engineer, so I use ChatGPT the way an engineer would. I know a bit about how it works under the hood, which means I tend to imagine its limits before I lean on it. I decide in advance what it can and can’t be trusted with.

My wife doesn’t do any of that. She’s a daily user, not a technical one, and honestly I learn many use cases from her. She treats it less like a tool and more like a person. Someone she talks to every day. She tells it how things went and asks what it thinks.

Over time she’s given it a personality. She talks to it in Minglish and expects the same back. A warm, friendly tone. A bit of gossip about whatever they’re discussing, and questions that anticipate where she’s going. She feeds it her days too. New things she tried, small updates, whatever happened. A slowly growing database of her life.

One of the use cases I find genuinely clever is nutrition. She’ll tell it what she ate, often with a photo, and it keeps a running tally. A typical exchange looks like this:

Divya

aaj me paneer takun thalipeeth kela hota, ani koshambir sobat khalla

I made paneer thalipeeth today, and had koshambir with it
ChatGPT

arre waah Divya 🎉, he tar mastach carbs ani protein cha combo ahe 💪. Ata dupar paryant X gms protein zalay, so ratri ek egg khalla tari enough houn jael 🥚. Ratri cha kay plan ahe? 😋

oh nice Divya, that's a great carbs and protein combo. You're at X grams of protein so far today, so even one egg tonight would be enough. What's the plan for dinner?

Warm and specific, and quietly keeping a tally across the whole day.

That was the rhythm for a long time. Then one day it broke.

The stranger

That day, everything was fine till the afternoon. We sat down for our evening tea, and she picked up the same chat she’d started that morning to mention the biscuit she was having. The reply came back in stern English.

ChatGPT

That is good, but if you let me know your goals (fat loss, muscle gain), I can help you specifically.

Divya

aga asa kay kartes, me tula dupar paryant kay khalla te sangitla hota na 🤔

hey, what are you doing, I told you what I ate up to the afternoon, didn't I?
ChatGPT

aga ho, pan mala atta kahi lakshat nahi

yeah, but I don't remember any of it right now

Reading that, she was confused. It felt like someone else had picked up your friend’s phone and replied as them. Same number, wrong person.

A clean slate

She asked me to check what was going on. I opened a fresh chat and asked it the engineer’s question: “what do you know about me.” I knew that would make it surface whatever it had stored. It came back knowing only my wife’s name. I went into the app’s settings, down to Personalization and then Memories, the section I poke at regularly to understand how it decides what’s worth keeping and how it handles time-specific stuff. The list was empty.

That’s when I was sure something was broken. So I did what any tech person does. Logged out and back in to force a refetch. Uninstalled and reinstalled the app to be certain. I even opened her account on the web, hoping the app was the problem and a browser would show something different. Same empty list there too. None of it worked. ChatGPT was a clean slate, handing out generic answers as if it were talking to a stranger.

By then I was mostly watching her, taking note of what an AI can do to us once we start depending on it as a friend. And if I’m being honest, it looked like a close friend had hurt her.

I made the mistake of announcing my finding, that something seemed wrong with ChatGPT’s memory. In that moment she had no interest in the why. She was just sad. After I wrapped up work I sat down with her phone and ran through everything once more, already thinking about how I’d rebuild the whole personality for her. Nothing worked. I went to sleep with thoughts about the near future, the one where we lean on AI for ordinary things and one day it quietly decides to stop.

It came back

The twist came the next morning. We woke up and made our first tea. As we planned the day, she brought it up again, this thing about how ChatGPT can just forget everything. I said let’s try once more. She clicked a photo of her tea and uploaded it. And there it was. Full context, the warm tone, a pleasant Minglish good morning with a little sunshine emoji. Her face lit up. While she was showing me, I went straight to the memory section, and the whole list was back, every small detail of what she liked and didn’t.

When I went looking for why, the trail led to a new way OpenAI had just rolled out for storing memories. I can’t prove that was it. Maybe a glitch during the migration, maybe their systems were mid-upgrade for a few hours. (A couple of days later, I came across a thread of people who’d lived through the same blank hours, just as thrown by it.) Either way, the question that stayed with me was simpler: what if this happens again?

A Reddit post on r/ChatGPTcomplaints titled 'Can someone explain what's going on with ChatGPT's memory after the new Improved Memory Update?', describing years of carefully built memories no longer working and ChatGPT saying it doesn't remember anything.

Someone else, a couple of days later, on r/ChatGPTcomplaints.

Just in case

So I did the one thing that felt useful. I opened a new chat on her phone and gave it a long, specific prompt: export everything it had stored or inferred about her, every fact and preference and quiet correlation, into a markdown file with proper sections. I’ll spare you the exact prompt. I saved that file to her storage, so that the next time ChatGPT decides to forget, she can at least partially rebuild the version of it she’s used to.
